Each of these days are from 9.30 till 5.30 with a one hour lunch break.

Qi Re-enforcing and Reducing Application in TCM Clinical Practice
This 2 day course is taught by Paul Brecher Principal of The College of Chinese Medicine. It is for all practitioners of Acupuncture, those who have already qualified and also students who are still in training.

Both Western Medical and Traditional Acupuncturists will benifit from this course.

Many people have heard of the idea of
reinforcing and reducing needling. It is mentioned in all classical texts and in many modern books however many acupuncturists do not know how to practicaly apply reinforcing and reducing needling technique.

This course will explain the theory and put it into a practicle context, also a number of acupuncture formulars will be taught. The formulars are for general health practice, they use a combination of points all over the body on all the meridians to achieve maximum effect. Some of the formulars that will be taught contain only two points others six or more. In addition to each of the individual formulars how they can be combined to create a larger treatment will be explained.

Some of the formulars are simple, we use reenforcing for deficient conditions and reducing for excessive conditions. However it is often the case that a patient will have a combination of excessive and deficient conditions mixed together, the more complex treatments for these situations will also be taught.

An example of Reenforcing and Reducing Needle Technique

To give a very simple example of many peoples current understanding and also how we can use reinforcing and reducing needling technique I will use acupuncture point spleen six.

Peoples current understanding

Sp 6 is acupunctured with the needle perpendicular, at ninety degrees to the skin, a vertical insertion. This point is used for menstural irregularities and brings great benifits.

Reinforcing and reducing needling technique on spleen six

The advanced way to use sp 6 is with
reinforcing and reducing needling technique. If we are using sp 6 as a point for treating menstural irregularities then the first thing we need to do is to classify them into to two groups, excessive and deficient conditions.

For example an excessive condition would be lower abdominal pain before menstration and a deficient condition would be exhaustion due to post menstural blood loss.

The direction of qi-energy flow in the spleen meridian is up the inside of the leg, so for the first excessive condition, lower abdominal pain before menstration, we would insert the needle at a thirty degree angle pointing down the leg, this is the reducing direction, against the qi flow, to reduce the excessive condition.

For the second deficient condition, exhaustion due to post menstural blood loss, we would insert the needle at a thirty degree angle pointing up the leg, this is the reenforcing direction, going with the qi flow, to reenforce the deficient condition.

The reducing treatment would be done before menstration because the downwards direction of the needle will incourage a downward movement of the blood which is the natural proccess that we are helping to improve, traditionaly pre menstural blood stagnation is the cause of the lower abdominal pain.

The reenforcing treatment would be done after menstration because the upwards direction of the neeedle will lift the qi - energy up into the body to strengthen it at the time when the body naturaly wants to replenish itself after the menstural blood loss.

The above example is a very simplified explanation to comunicate the idea and basic principles of
reinforcing and reducing needling technique. On the course more suffisticated and interesting ways of using reinforcing and reducing needling technique will be explained.

Also on the course needle length and depth of insertion for each of the points used will also be taught. When a needle is
perpendicular / at ninety degrees to the skin / a vertical insertion, it is often the case that only a very shallow depth can be achieved due to the local anatomy. However when the needle is inserted along the meridian in a reenforcing or reducing direction a deeper insertion becomes possible.

This is very important because a shallow insertion will only influence the surface layer of the meridian but a deep insertion will connect the needle with the main branch of the meridian creating a greater benifit for the patient.

There is another area called
reinforcing and reducing needle manipulation. This is the correct way to lift and thrust and rotate and twist the needle once it has been inserted in to the meridian in the correct direction. Reinforcing and reducing needle manipulation will not be taught on this CPD course, only reinforcing and reducing needling technique. Many people get these two different systems confused. Needling technique always works wether one does needle manipulation or not.

The following main points will be taught on this two day course, these points are used in general practice because they are easy to access and are known to have a strong action and can be used for a variety of conditions.

Large Intestine 4
Spleen 4
Spleen 6
Kidney 3

On the course how to use these points in combination with each other with the reinforcing and reducing needling technique will be explained. Also points that arise through general discussion will also be covered.
