Course Outline
The course is based on 2 four-hour sessions.
The emphasis of the
course falls on the practical
application of auricular acupuncture in alcohol and drug rehabilitation
how to locate the ear points, and how to needle them. There will be a
2 hour theoretical lecture during the first meeting which covers basic
anatomy of the ear, general concept of auricular therapy, health and
safety issues and contraindications for auricular acupuncture.
The remainder of the course will concentrate on practical work. Developing good acupuncture technique will enable students to practice in this specialized area of auricular therapy with confidence.
Examination is by continuous assessment. During the last session the students perform auricular acupuncture on real patients (under supervision), and those who reach the satisfactory standard are awarded a Certificate of Proficiency in Auricular Acupuncture for Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation.
Successful students are accepted as Auricular Therapy Members of the Acupuncture Society, and are entitled to use the initials MAcSAu after their names.
The annual membership to the Acupuncture Society is 50 pounds.
Course Objectives
The course centres on a specialized treatment that is used to control symptoms of tension, irritability, hypersensitivity, anxiety, depression and other states of nervous imbalance associated with withdrawal of opiates, nicotine and alcohol as well stress.
Auricular acupuncture is a powerful therapeutic technique which can be used as part of the patient recovery program.
Course Structure
1ST SESSION
- Introduction: 10 -15 minutes
- Theoretical lecture: 2 hours
- Demonstration of the treatment on all participants: 30 minutes
- Starting needle practice and point location: 1 hour
- Discussion - questions & comments: 15 minutes
Homework: puncturing practice. Points location
2nd SESSION
- Needle practice: 15 minutes
- Locating the ear points using the point locator: 1 hour
- Doing each others ears using the point locator: 1hour
- Each student doing real time auricular acupuncture (under supervision) on 4 5 patients
- Final discussion
- Presenting the Certificates of Proficiency in Auricular Acupuncture for Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation
To complete the course students are required to carry out and submit case studies of 10 treatments (minimum of 4 different patients). Upon receiving the case studies (and the annual membership fee), students are accepted as Auricular Members of the Acupuncture Society and Certificates of Membership is issued.
Who Can Apply
The course is designed specifically for therapists working in drug and alcohol rehabilitation centres. It is also open to anybody with interest in acupuncture, auricular therapy and stress management.

The cost of the course is 180 pounds per student

The Lecturer
Dragomir Lubomirov is
42 years old. He has been
practising massage therapy for over 15 years. He has studied deep
tissue, sports and remedial massage both in the UK and Bulgaria. He
studied acupuncture and Chinese medicine for 4 years at the College of
Chinese Medicine, London and has been practising for the last 10 years.
